Sony Pictures’ long history began in 1918, when brothers Harry and Jack Cohn teamed up with Joe Brandt to produce short films, calling the company CBC Film Sales.

A few years later, in 1924, CBC moved to Hollywood and became Columbia Pictures Corporation. The company continued to grow and became increasingly recognized for award-winning films such as Lawrence of Arabia, A Man for Eternity, Midnight Express, and Kramer vs. Kramer.

Ten years after this last film, in 1989, a Japanese multinational, Sony Corporation, acquired Columbia Pictures Corporation and all its entertainment franchises, to become Sony Pictures Entertainment (SPE).

This “new” company was housed in the former MGM studios in Culver City, California, which it called Sony Pictures Studios, from which subsidiaries specialized in the production and distribution of independent American and foreign films, and more recently in feature films and animated movies, would be created.
